Featured Item: Gourd Vibes Only

As the leaves turn to tints of reddish-orange, it’s time to head to the market to bring home the knobbiest, knurliest, and gnarliest Cucurbit fruits you can find—that’s right, it’s decorative gourd season once again, folks. 

 

Gourds are the knobby cousin of the pumpkin, but they are prized for their crazy names and mishappen ugly bodies.  Consumers flock every year to these displays of brightly colored and shiny bitter gourds.  Personally, I’ve been known to dig to the bottom of those supermarket bins looking for the weirdest ones! (I’m sorry Mr. Produce Man)

 

Just the thought of all those warty ornamental fruits really gets my pumpkin spiced blood pumping.  Already I’m trying to remember where my old wicker baskets are?  Because nothing screams fall, like a wicker basket and gourds!  It’s all about arranging them like they just spilled over perfectly onto the table and sprinkle a few leaves around them like they just blew in from the cool crisp air outside… can’t you just smell the pumpkin in the air?

 

I admit I get geeky over gourds, but they’re  the easiest and most economical way to spruce up your home for the season.  They come in an array of colors, shapes, and sizes to fit anyone’s style.  They can be set in a group or displayed solo.  The best part is, they last …F.O.R.E.V.E.R! They won’t start to decompose on a hot day like a pumpkin will.

 

So the hunt for the coolest gourds can start now and can last through Thanksgiving!  It’s quite amazing how these guys multiply in my home over the next few months.  

 

The one thing that makes me teary is throwing them out after Thanksgiving.  Here they sat, bringing endless joy to me and my house guests, only to be tossed in the bin.  But not  this year!  As an advid Pinterest person I have found some cool ways to repurpose my seasonal gourds.  You’ll see, I will have the cutest little gourd bird feeders this winter!  Stay tuned if I rea lly follow through,but regardless, it’s that time of year, so don some flannel, grab a hot cup of pumpkin spice tea, and feel free to gourd your heart out!
