Are you ready for the “sweetest six weeks of summer”?  We have the first crops of the California cherries available now.  Eagerly anticipated worldwide, the California cherry is the first variety to be available each season. They can cause quite a frenzy when they hit the shelves.  This is  mostly due to the anticipation of wanting a brightly colored, juicy, ripe cherry, but also because of the short season.  Sadly, California cherries disappear almost as quickly as they arrive.  Don’t miss out on these little stone fruits!  The chart below from the California Cherry Board shows just how short the season runs.
Cherries are known to be great for our immune systems.  They are packed with vitamin C and helpful to our digestive systems, but cherries also have some amazing little known health benefits.  For one, did you know that they can help athletic performance and reduce your post workout soreness?  In a recent study of marathon runners, those who consumed concentrated amounts of cherries ten days prior to their race experienced a 13% faster race time.   Additionally, research shows that the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds naturally found in cherries help relieve exercise-induced muscle pain, damage, and inflammation.
Eating cherries may also help improve your sleep quality.  Cherries naturally contain melatonin.  Melatonin is a substance that helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle.  Eating more cherries and often, has been linked to longer sleep time, as well as sleep quality.  This is especially important to note as we get older.  Our bodies produce less melatonin as we age.

Now is the time to start buying and eating cherries!  We’re all trying to stay healthy and work out more.  Cherries are the perfect snack to consume for as long as the season lasts.  Exercise and sleep are key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
